Next-Generation Fuels
Why is fuel development important?
The energy systems of tomorrow will depend on cleaner-burning fuels to reduce emissions and will also require fuels tailored for high-performance applications. Designing new fuels and predicting their emissions and performance is typically time-consuming, expensive, and unreliable. The Hanson Research Group develops capabilities to improve the pre-screening process for new fuels, collects crucial chemical kinetics data for fuel models, and performs detailed experimental characterization of novel fuels. This research improves the ability of designers to predict a new fuel’s emissions, performance characteristics, and physical properties early in the development cycle to quickly decide on a candidate fuel’s suitability. Our approaches are designed to help deploy new fuels in energy systems worldwide more quickly and cheaply than ever before.
